''Do you believe it ?''
These were the first words this morning at briefing from competition director Robert Danewid. He announced after a nice good morning to all, that today the metereological summer starts. " Do you believe it". Yes it is June 1 2006, but it does n't feel like it. But.....there is hope as our meteo man said that we "might " have 20 dgr. tomorrow afternoon, which gave him a big applause. But....another but as after Saturday when we still have 20 dgr. we will have the cold air back!!!!!Grrrrrrr.....
What happened at briefing:
It started very punctually at 10, Robert is very strict with the time, which is good. The President of the International Jury, Tor Johannessen was welcomed as well as steward Arold Solbakken.He announced possible doping controles , so with lots of pilots having a cold ,the flu ,earinfections or hay fever, it is important to give a little document called; Therapeutic Use Exemption. Furtheron he urged everybody who had not done the acceptance check, to do so today, better then tomorrow, so then it is out of the way. My friend Art from Canada is doing a good job there.
We "might " fly today but a new briefing will be around 1 o' clock.
Question from the organisers; Please fly without water today, to keep the runways in good order and tow out carefully as specially that area is pretty wet; the runway 05 is ok.
The weather for today;
Very easily said, there is low over Russia and a high over the UK.Today we still have a cold northerly in the E part of the competition area with temperatures between 10 and 12 and in the W. around 15 dgr. Cloud base will be between 1500 and 2000 m., between 1 and 4pm. The visibility is good with 50 km. plus.
At 11 there was a special TC meeting called by the English TC. Topics as airspace[ a new airspace file has been put on the net yesterday!] competition boundary and heightlimits, frequences and airtraffic frequences were discussed to everybodies statisfaction.
At 12 was announced that the new briefing would be at 2 pm. Time enough for lunch at 1 and a nice welcome story from the President from the Swedish Soaring federation, Christer Hard af Segerstad.
He welcomes pilots ,teams and officials from 6 continents and calls this competition "a truly international event, with around 600 people being directly involved."
" We will see a fair and challenging competition, beautiful and technically advanced gliders and be able to listen to wild stories from the liars' bench in the evenings. This is a time and a place where old friends as well as new friends meet."
How true is this!!!
It is also nice to know that this is the very first event which is certified as environmentally friendly. Will be back after the next briefing!
2.30;
Briefing has been and...unfortunately the showers ,only light , are moving slower then expected , while the nice good weather is only about 50 k. to the W. from us.Result; no task today, but if there is thermal activity the grid will be open for pilots who want to fly. Quite a lot take the opportunity. I am going to have a look at the field. Till later!
